Technology
Technology is everywhere. There is no escaping it. It is engineers who are shaping the future. It is their work that will, in part, determine how we tackle the challenges of the coming decades. This puts a great responsibility on the shoulders of knowledge institutions which educate those engineers, such as TU Delft.
Jacob Fokkema
The departing Rector Magnificus, Jacob Fokkema, has used his rectorship above all to educate engineers who focus on the future and realise that they will bear a considerable responsibility for the society of tomorrow. Delft is known internationally as a university which, in cooperation with the other universities of technology of the Netherlands, strives to link technology with ethics systematically.
Start of the ceremony
The Dies Natalis will take place in the TU Delft Aula building (Mekelweg 5) and will begin at 15.00 in the main auditorium on the third floor. You are requested to take your seats in the main auditorium by 14.45. Speeches will be given in both English and Dutch, by turn. Simultaneous translation facilities will be available, with headsets available at the entrance of the auditorium.

Educatief project
De studenten hebben in het kader van dit educatieve project gekeken naar de aanslagen op de Twin Towers en het Pentagon. De conclusie van het zomerprogramma is dat de Twin Towers waarschijnlijk zijn ingestort als gevolg van de combinatie van de impact van het vliegtuig en de brand die daarop volgde, zegt dr.ir. Coen Vermeeren, directeur van Studium Generale en initiator van het programma. Op internet wordt gespeculeerd dat dat niet mogelijk is, maar volgens de technische analyse van onze studenten is dat het meest waarschijnlijk.
Ten aanzien van de aanslag op het Pentagon denken de studenten o.a. dat het schade aan de gevel van het Pentagon overeenkomt komt met de zware onderdelen van een groot verkeersvliegtuig. Ook andere observaties, zoals de schade aan lantaarnpalen en gevonden onderdelen, bevestigen dat het waarschijnlijk om een zwaar verkeersvliegtuig ging, zoals de Amerikaanse overheid heeft verklaard.
Op de presentatie op 12 september worden de conclusies van de zomeropdracht van Studium Generale toegelicht.

De Delftse rector magnificus prof.dr.ir. Jakob Fokkema zal spreken over het idee van een European Institute of Technology. Fokkema betrekt hierin tevens de samenwerkingsverbanden waar de TU Delft al in participeert: 3TU (de drie Nederlandse TUs) en de IDEA League (met ETH Zürich, RTWH Aken en Imperial College Londen).
Fokkema: Voordelen van een netwerk zijn de kruisbestuivingen, de schaalvergroting en het verbinden van excellente onderdelen. De IDEA League is daarvoor een proof of concept. Door de 3TU en IDEA League onderdeel te laten zijn van het EIT-netwerk, kan EIT snel uitgroeien tot een wereldwijd concurrerende organisatie van onderzoek, onderwijs en technologietransfer. Een verbeterde concurrentiepositie door een betere Europese samenwerking.

De "Godfather of Italian Product Design" zal op uitnodiging van i.d, de studievereniging van Industrieel Ontwerpen, spreken over de strategie die Alessi tot een succes maakte en de toenemende samenwerking van Alessi met andere gerenomeerde bedrijven. Alberto Alessi is algemeen directeur van Alessi, en leidt de afdelingen marketing communicatie en design van het bedrijf. Hij heeft naam gemaakt door het vermogen de juiste balans te vinden tussen risicovolle projecten en commercieel succes.
Alberto Alessi behoort tot de derde generatie van Alessi. Hij nam de teugels van het familiebedrijf over in 1970. Zijn vader legde de basis voor de ontwikkeling van het 80 jaar oude bedrijf voor huishoudelijke artikelen tot toonaangevend in design, toen hij in 1946 de bekende stalen producten introduceerde, zoals de Bombe thee- en koffieset. Alberto Alessi zette deze ontwikkeling voort, door de collectie uit te breiden met klokken, lampen, speelgoed, objecten van glas, porselein, plastic en hout, en samen te werken met enkele van de meest succesvolle ontwerpers ter wereld.
