In the field of Ports and Waterways many developments are taking place, often in response to external conditions such as the changes in ship dimensions.This Farewell Speech presents a number of these developments as they occurred over the past 15 years and discusses the role which research has played in each case. The transition is described from rather fragmented research projects to more structured, long term research programmes, in cooperation with sector partners, of which two examples are given. The Speech is concluded with a look into future technical, economic and societal developments, which may have an affect on the planning, design and operations of ports and waterways and what these mean in terms of education and research at TU-Delft.
